Experienced Animal Nursing Assistant (ANA) / Veterinary Care Assistant (VCA)

Belfast Veterinary Care is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Animal Nursing Assistant (ANA) or Veterinary Care Assistant (VCA) to join our dedicated team. As an Experienced ANA/VCA with a minimum of 5 years in the field, you will play a crucial role in supporting our veterinarians and ensuring top-quality care for our animal patients. Your responsibilities will include assisting with animal examinations, handling and restraining animals during procedures, administering medications under supervision, providing post-operative care, monitoring vital signs, maintaining accurate records, and offering compassionate support to both patients and their owners.

Criteria

Essential Criteria:

  • Formal Qualifications: 

    • Relevant certification in animal care.

  • Animal Care Experience: 

    • Proven experience working with a variety of domestic animals (dogs, cats, small mammals). Competence in handling and restraining animals safely.

  • Medical Knowledge: 

    • Understanding of basic animal health and welfare principles. Ability to assist veterinarians with routine procedures (vaccinations, wound care, etc.).

  • Communication Skills: 

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to provide clear and accurate information to clients and colleagues.

  • Team Player: 

    • Capable of working collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. Willingness to assist colleagues and support veterinary staff.

  • Attention to Detail: 

    • Strong observational skills for monitoring animal behaviour and health. Accurate record-keeping and documentation skills.

  • Physical Fitness: 

    • Ability to handle physical demands of the role (lifting and restraining animals, cleaning kennels, etc.).

  • Customer Service: 

    • Friendly and professional demeanour with clients and visitors. Empathy and compassion towards animals and their owners.

Desirable Criteria:

​

  • Education:

    • Continued education in veterinary nursing or related fields.

  • Anaesthesia Monitoring Skills: 

    • Experience in assisting with anaesthesia monitoring during surgeries. Familiarity with anaesthesia equipment and protocols.

  • Laboratory Skills: 

    • Basic knowledge of laboratory procedures (blood draws, urinalysis, etc.). Experience in sample preparation and handling.

  • Medication Administration: 

    • Competency in administering medications and treatments under veterinary supervision.

  • Client Education: 

    • Ability to educate clients on basic pet care and preventative health measures. Comfortable discussing treatment plans and aftercare instructions with pet owners.

  • Specialised Animal Handling: 

    • Experience with exotic animals or specialised breeds. Knowledge of behavioural techniques for handling anxious or aggressive animals.

  • Software Proficiency: 

    • Familiarity with veterinary practice management software. Ability to navigate electronic medical records and scheduling systems.
